Act of Faith
O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe these and all the truths which the holy catholic Church teaches, because in revealing them you can neither deceive nor be deceived.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Our History
The Office of Divine Worship and Liturgy was established to support the Archbishop in his role as the chief liturgist for the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg.
The office supports the archbishop in his role through the preparation of liturgies celebrated by the people of the diocese (i.e. Ordinations, Chrism Mass, Rite of Election, etc.). The office also helps parishes and groups in their celebrations of Episcopal Liturgies (Mass or special prayer services with the archbishop).
The Office for Divine Worship and Liturgy is also a resource for parishes, groups and individuals who need clarification on liturgical issues.
Our Mission:
The Office of Divine Worship and Liturgy nurtures and supports the prayer life of the archdiocese celebrated through the Sacred Mysteries. In addition, the Office fosters continued liturgical renewal which calls for full and active participation in every celebration of the liturgy. The Office is committed to assist parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Johannesburg to celebrate the liturgy that the Church calls us to celebrate so that it will be truly that summit and font from which lives of the people of the Archdiocese flows.
The Office of Divine Worship and Liturgy accomplishes its mission through:
- Assisting the Archbishop in his role as the principal liturgist of the Archdiocese.
- Coordination of all episcopal and archdiocesan liturgies.
- Recommendation and formation of particular norms, practices, guidelines in keeping with the liturgical praxis and norms of the Church.
- Providing resource on liturgical matters for the Archbishop, parishes of the Archdiocese, and other Archdiocesan ministry offices.
- Implementation of catechesis and liturgical formation on the parish level, deanery level and the diocesan level in collaboration with other Archdiocesan ministries.
Our Vision
Among the many provisions in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we find the following statements that provide us with our vision:
The liturgy daily builds up those who are within into a holy temple of the Lord, into a dwelling place for God in the Spirit, to the mature measure of the fullness of Christ, at the same time it marvellously strengthens their power to preach Christ and thus shows forth the Church to those who are outside as a sign lifted up among the nations, under which the scattered children of God may be gathered together, until there is one sheepfold and one shepherd. (SC 2)
The very nature of liturgical celebrations is to give the glory and praise to God through our full, conscious, and active participation. (SC 14)
Our Aim
”Nevertheless the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made sons and daughters of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of His Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord’s supper.” Sacrosactum Concilium (10)
Our Objectives
The Office of Divine Worship and Liturgy is committed to implementing the authentic liturgical vision of the Second Vatican Council.
Through the assistance rendered to parishes and individuals as well as our involvement in archdiocesan liturgies, ministry formation programs, and collaboration with other archdiocesan department, it is our sincere hope the Office of Divine Worship and Liturgy will aid in achieving ”full, active and conscious” liturgical participation in every parish and institution in the archdiocese.
DAY ONE: St. Joseph, the Foster Father of Jesus
Saint Joseph, you were privileged to share in the mystery of the Incarnation as the foster-father of Jesus. In a direct manner you shared in the support, upbringing and protection of the Holy Family.
God gave you a heart that was filled with supernatural love, far deeper and more powerful than any natural father’s love could be.
What a wonderful and sublime vocation was yours to be the husband of Mary and the foster-father of Jesus. In your house at Nazareth and under your care, Jesus, the Redeemer of the world was preparing himself for his public ministry.
Joseph, I honour you and implore, through your powerful intercession, to obtain from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death and the special grace I now implore:
(mention your request ………………….).
Guardian of the Word incarnate, I am confident that your prayers, on my behalf, will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.
THE ‘YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH’ PRAYER
To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness.
As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

Our Father; Hail Mary; Glory be to the Father….

DAY TWO: St. Joseph, the Husband of Mary
Saint Joseph, I honour you as the true husband of Mary. Scripture says: ‘Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, and of her was born Jesus who is called Christ’ (Matt. 1:16). Your marriage to Mary was the way God chose to introduce Jesus to the world and God entrusted the care of Mary and Jesus to your care.
You were her faithful companion, support and comforter. Your love for Mary was based on your esteem for her as Mother of God.
Saint Joseph, I praise God for privilege He gave you of being the husband of Mary. Obtain for me the grace to love Jesus with all my heart, as you did, and to love Mary with some of the tenderness and loyalty with which you loved her.
Holy Saint Joseph, you are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. Be my guide and my model through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary to my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore.
(Mention your request……………………..).
Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I am confident that your prayers, on my behalf, will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.
