CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN SOUTH AFRICA HAVE CALLED FOR 40 DAYS OF LENTEN PRAYER AND FASTING FOR AN END TO VIOLENCE IN OUR NATION
As part of observance of Lent, the Catholic bishops in South Africa have called on all followers of Christ, Catholic and those of other denominations, to observe 40 days of Prayer and Fasting, starting from the Ash Wednesday on 19th February, for an end to violence that has plagued our nation.
The Bishops’ call for fasting and prayer for an end to violence follows the pastoral letter that they issued during the 16 days of activism in November calling on all Christians to take an active role in ending violence against women.
The Catholic Bishops have also published a booklet for community dialogue on violence, entitled “I set before you life and death, choose life.” In the booklet, the bishops have indicated that they are concerned with the various forms of violence that are creating hurt and wounds in our nation: the violence in the schools, the violence against women, the violence against the unborn, the violence in the families, the gang violence in our communities, the violence during the service delivery protests, the violence in our farms, the violence in the workplace during labour disputes, the violence against immigrants, the violence, the noise and the storms in our hearts.
In the next forty days, the bishops would like all the Catholic parishes in South Africa to use the booklet to discuss and identify the activities that Christians should do in South Africa both individually and as a community of faith to combat the various forms of violence.
